Blair is the first projection painting I tried after hearing Steve talk about the method. It was made from a romanticized photograph of Blair that I took while he was recovering from a car accident in which he was badly smashed up. He was the man with whom I spent nine of my thirteen-year hiatus from Steve. The photo I took portrayed a wide-eyed innocent, a man standing apart from destruction, his own and that of our relationship. I painted him with the hope of understanding what had happened or at least making a very pretty picture. I believe I caught the agony and hopelessness, a truer picture of the man, in the not very pretty painting. I have to say that I learned nothing and suspect I will never understand, any of it.
