St. Helena, Napa Valley Painting Movie

Steve Harlow and Ruth Parson Painting on a rainy day in St. Helena, Napa Valley Rainy Day Painting.

Our first attempt to paint together En Plein Air was in St. Helena, Napa Valley, California a few days after our daughter's San Francisco wedding. We had traveled from our current New York home to the familiar area of our former home for a week of celebration and relaxation. We planned two days, one night in Napa Valley, drove up from the city in a car borrowed from our new Son-in-Law, who was too busy honeymooning in Tuscany to need it.

We equipped ourselves for our painting adventure with nicely made, French, Plein Air easels, water-based Gouache paint, appropriate brushes and small blocks of watercolor paper. After tasting and purchasing some fine local wine, we were challenged by difficulties. The car ended up in a repair shop, leaving us without transportation, and it rained heavily on our painting day. We did not despair, we set up on the motel's porch, painted the lovely vineyard across the street.

We captured some of our efforts on video, editing it into a 8min 4sec movie. On the movie soundtrack, we selected a couple of the many songs we enjoyed while painting, namely "Olv 26" by Stereolab from their album, "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" and "Good Fortune Is Ours And Luck Has Sided With Us" by PunchDrunk from their 1998 album, "Bird Bird".
