Water Taxi

Returning from the market in Chelsea, my cab driver was a jolly African talking excitedly in melodically accented English, eyes smiling in the rear view mirror. Comments on recent weather turned to unexpected changes in weather patterns and to global warming. Laughing, he asserted global warming could be good if polar land became livable.

"We'd be underwater here in Manhattan", I reminded.

"New York will survive", he assured. "We'd build dikes or lift the city up somehow."

He seemed then to digress, marveling at the beauty of the water cycle, how the amount remains constant however it is used, stored, frozen, or boiled, water always stays here on our planet. With delight, he pointed out that more people living healthier, longer lives would cause more water to be stored in our collective human bodies as the polar ice stores less.

"It might balance", he laughed.

"A very interesting point of view", I congratulate him, "I like it".

At my building, the few dollars I gave in tip left me indebted to his insight.
