Proposal For A National Day Of Remembrance

September 4, 2002

Travel on September 11th to visit those we love who are far away. Send a message to the world that America is united, brave and strong and at the same time boost our flailing economy. Flying september 11th is a very caring, brave and patriotic endeavor.

Celebrate life and celebrate it in the skies. Reach out to those around us and remember those who were lost. Like it or not, we are at war and like buying war bonds, we are asking YOU, America, to help us win. They win if they force us to live in fear. Rise up and stand a hundred stories tall by flying on September 11th.

September 11th is a National day to remember. Take the chance to travel and visit those far from home. We must go on and not let terrorism undercut our freedom and way of life. They can't stop us. Their mission is not just. We will rise from the ashes and prove that trying to destroy democracy with terrorism will fail.

this is not for me, i'll stay on the ground watching the skies. every plane looking ridiculously dangerous, a gas tank waiting to blow up, huge and overhead, a metaphor for a civilization with out a clue, one that honors individuals, maintains a social fabric, all the while, lobbing death bombs over our heads for the sake of transportation. getting more people in the sky is not my idea of a fitting remembrance. but, i'm a big wus, even the artwork makes me anxious. the dewd pointing, i'm like, "don't point that thing at me, big guy!"

i was talking to a friend outside j&r about 6pm last week, when loud sirens cried out from the wtc area, very retro, very london in the blitz. hundreds on the sidewalk looked at the hole in the skyline, going, "what the fuk?" loud and clear, a public address voice, "EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY! EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY! I look straight up, there's a rainbow in the high cirrus clouds being pierced by a wide-winged military plane. I think to myself, "the bombs have been dropped, no place to run and no time to hide!"

i'm not feeling strong these days, I think some underlying assumptions are whacky. for me, planes overhead look like disaster. I don't get warm, or even, defiant feelings about folks flying to visit loved ones. i'm like, "don't be flying over my hood, yo!" regardless of whatever message, NEW YORK IS A NO-FLY ZONE! loved ones far away are at their best.
