• John Woo
  The first of John Woo movies I saw was "The Killer". The beauty of the filmmaking impressed me mightily, the incredible choreographed action sequences thrilled me, the jazz playing hit man, Chow Yun Fat who sweetly gives a flower to the beautiful girl in the midst of a gun battle, made me smile, the over-top-gruesomeness of the concluding scenes made me laugh. It has all the Woo motifs, the fluttering doves in a church, two or more assailants holding guns on each other, speed boat gun battles, a two-pistolled hero, and is filled with the strangely beautiful, over-the-top gun fight action all Woo fans love.
  
  I recommend "Bullet In The Head" with a warning - it is unrelentingly grim, devastatingly brutal, it is the buddy movie to end all buddy movies. Don't miss which buddy holds two pistols, this John Woo hero identifier makes a difference here, where there seem to be no heros. It is a Vietnam War movie from an entirely different angle, only the strong should watch.
  
  "Face Off", John Woo's third American movie is the first one to truly be a John Woo movie. He delightfully restates his enduring motifs, explores his beloved themes, this is "The Killer" gone Hollywood. Travolta, Cage - both on fire, both intense, plus the speedboats, and fluttering doves! John Woo is in the house!
  
  "Mission Impossible 2" - if it wasn't for Woo, I'd never watch Tom Cruise. I'd never see a second sequel to a TV show I wasn't a fan of. But, it is John Woo and to hell with Cruise, it's terrific Woo action, balletic and thrilling! Woo blowing away the enertia of high-budget Hollywood sequels with his brilliant, idiosyncratic vision.

• Chow Yun Fat
  Whether you call him Chow Yun Fat or Yun-Fat Chow, Chow Yun Fat movies show him to be handsome and cool, a creative alter-ego to John Woo as Marcello Mastroianni was for Federico Fellini. Always a great actor, he's a powerful presence when directed by John Woo, . Out of the many great Chow Yun Fat films, in addition to the Woo films, I recommend his performance in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" by the wonderful, Chinese-American director, Ang Lee. This gorgeous film is almost taken over by the electrifying Ziyi Zhang, but the stately Michelle Yeoh and a commanding Chow Yun Fat maintain the balance, making "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" extraordinary.
  
  
• Leslie Cheung (Cheung Kwok Wing)
  Sadly, he died young in 2003. He was great in many famous films such as "Farewell My Concubine", "A Better Tomorrow", Chinese Ghost Story. He's small and light with emotional depth burning through his dreamy face. He was a also a pop singer, had a 1986 hit with "The Love We Once Knew" - the "For A Better Tomorrow" theme. Some of Leslie Cheung movies are by my current favorite art-film director, Wong Kar-Wai, who used him in his the 1994 bizarre and mythic (very Chinese), "The Ashes Of Time". I'm recommending Leslie in Wong's artful study of a destructive gay relationship "Happy Together" set in Argentina, Leslie plays a bratty, sluttish, but, irresistable bar fop. He sings the ironic title song, "Happy Together" - the Turtles 1966 hit, over the end credits.
  
  
• Cherie Chung (Cho-Hung Chung)
  As the prettiest of three lovely ladies in Tsui Hark's maniac action comedy Peking Opera Blues, Cherie is a bright comic actress, who often is more cute than glamorous. However, in 1988, she got very sexy with her good friend, Leslie Cheung in Fatal Love. Though both these movies are great, I'm recommending her in a sweet 1987 romantic comedy, "An Autumn's Tale", with Chow Yun Fat, because of its effective use of low-budget New York settings and the how convincing she and Chow are in the touching story of unrequited love under the Manhattan Bridge.

• Kenneth Tsang
  As the Bad Step-Father, Mr. Tsang, as he does in so many movies, plays the villain. He is formidable, John Woo uses him in almost every film, DVD 2-Pack: The Killer/ Hard Boiled. Many other Hong Kong directors do as well. Perhaps you'd be interested in seeing him as General Moon in the 20th James Bond, movie, Die Another Day (the Halle Berry one).
  
  
• Chu Kong
  As the Good Step-Father, the sad-eyed, kind-faced, Chu Kong also plays a role familiar in most of John Woo's Hong Kong movies. I also enjoyed him with the incomparable, Gong Li in Zhang Yimou's classic Raise the Red Lantern.
