Ira on MDC and Bad Brains
Sun, 10 Mar 2002Ira wrote, The first time MDC came to NY, I was living on Ludlow Street, I think it was in early '81. I don't remember how, but Dave and Tammi came to stay with me. I think he was a friend of Robby Crypt Crasher or maybe 4way from Bad Posture. Not that it mattered, but, at the time Dave had told us he was gay or bi and Tammi was the same. He was into a disciplinary type of thing with Tammi and a few other things, as well. I was working in the adult scene in NY at the time, for which I was well known for many years and did take him around to many of the clubs and shows. When they were about to do a show at a club on 2nd Ave. just off of Houston, word started getting around that the Bad Brains were talking shit about MDC and gays and any1 who lived in a different life style. They printed out flyers condemning the band and urged people not to go to the show. I was working that show and every1 showed up. HR and crew were outside really stirring it up and when the show started some1 associated with them had gone to the store and gotten some eggs and brought them inside. The yolk was flying and the preaching started leading up to a rather interesting pushing and shoving match for all involved. The show did go on and Dave and Tammi left about a week later. I was always surprised at how many people forgave the Bad Brains for this. For me, it was the last straw and I completely dissociated myself with them, especially after HR's comments on a woman friend of mine when he found out that she was a dominatrix and how she and all the other women like her should burn in Hell. As a final note, I never spoke to Dave again either, due to the fact he had set a small fire in my apartment and left me with a $200 phone bill despite not being too upset about the fire. |
